Dajti Mountain Cable Car: A Half-Day Trip from Tirana

If you have more than a few hours in Tirana — a full day, an overnight, or a long layover — the Dajti Ekspres cable car is the easiest way to trade the city for mountain views without a car or a tour group. Here’s how to do it as a half-day trip.

What is Dajti Ekspres?

Dajti Ekspres is a cable car (one of the longest in the Balkans) that climbs from the eastern edge of Tirana up to Mount Dajti, Tirana’s “balcony” at around 1,000 meters. The ride itself takes about 15 minutes each way and gives sweeping views over the city, the Adriatic coast on clear days, and the mountains behind.

Getting to the cable car station

The base station is about 25–30 minutes from the city center by taxi or rideshare (Bolt works well in Tirana), or roughly 20 minutes by car if you’re driving yourself. There’s no direct public bus to the station, so a taxi is the simplest option — expect to pay somewhere around 500–800 Lek each way.

Tickets and opening hours

Tickets are bought in cash or by card at the base station — no need to book ahead outside of major holidays. The cable car typically runs from mid-morning to early evening, but hours shift seasonally and it occasionally closes for high winds, so it’s worth checking conditions before you commit, especially in winter.

What’s at the top

At the summit there’s a small panoramic area, walking trails through pine forest, a handful of restaurants with terrace views, and in warmer months a few additional attractions (zip lines, horse riding, a small amusement area) aimed at families. Even a simple walk along the ridge and lunch at one of the terrace restaurants makes for a relaxed couple of hours.

How much time do you need?

Budget a half day: about 2.5–3.5 hours round trip including the taxi, the cable car rides, and an hour or two at the top. Add an extra hour if you want a proper sit-down lunch with a view rather than just walking around.

Is it worth it with limited time?

If you only have a short layover (under 4–5 hours), Dajti is a stretch — between the taxi ride, the cable car, and getting back, you’d be cutting it close. For that kind of window, our Tirana layover guide or Skanderbeg Square walking guide are a better fit. Dajti is best saved for travelers with a full day, an overnight, or a long layover of 6+ hours.

Heading up the mountain with your bags still on you? Don’t. Drop them with us near Skanderbeg Square before you grab a taxi — much easier than hauling luggage onto a cable car.
